Two different jobs, one product aisle
It's easy to assume "deodorant" and "antiperspirant" are just two brand names for the same thing. They're not. They're built to solve two separate problems, and knowing which one you're actually trying to solve makes the choice a lot simpler.
What deodorant does
Deodorant does not stop you from sweating. Its job is to manage the smell that develops after you sweat, usually through a combination of antimicrobial ingredients (to reduce the bacteria that cause odour) and fragrance (to mask what's left). You still perspire normally; the product is working on what happens after that.
What antiperspirant does
Antiperspirant is designed to reduce how much you sweat in the first place, typically using aluminium-based compounds. These react with the moisture and proteins on the skin's surface and within the sweat duct, forming a temporary physical plug that blocks the gland from releasing sweat to the surface. Less sweat reaching the skin means less material for odour-causing bacteria to break down — so antiperspirants often reduce odour too, but as a side effect of blocking sweat, not by masking it directly.
Why the distinction matters
If your main concern is visible sweat marks or feeling damp, an antiperspirant addresses the actual cause. If your concern is smell but you don't mind sweating normally (or actively prefer not to block a natural bodily function), a deodorant does that job without interfering with perspiration. A lot of people use combination products without realising which mechanism is doing the work — useful to know if one stops working for you and you want to troubleshoot why.
A quick note on aluminium
Aluminium-based antiperspirants have been the subject of long-running public concern, particularly around breast cancer risk. To date, reviews of the evidence have not found a proven direct link between antiperspirant use and cancer risk. That said, some people still prefer to avoid aluminium salts for other reasons — sensitive skin, a general preference for minimal ingredient lists, or simply wanting sweat glands to function unblocked. Both are legitimate reasons to choose differently; neither is about disputing the safety data.
How to actually decide
Ask yourself what you're solving for: wetness, or smell, or both. If it's genuinely both, a combination formula makes sense. If it's just one, choosing the product built specifically for that problem — rather than defaulting to whichever is more heavily marketed — usually works better and irritates the skin less.
