PPD Hair Colour and Monsoon Scalp Sensitivity: A Timing Problem Most People Don't Know They Have

by ruckmani ananthanarayanan on Aug 17, 2026

Hair colour reactions — itching, redness, swelling along the hairline — are usually blamed on the product itself. Rarely is the season considered. But if you've coloured your hair with a PPD-based (paraphenylenediamine) dye during monsoon and had a worse reaction than usual, the timing is very likely part of the cause, not a coincidence.

Why Monsoon Scalp Is Already Compromised Before the Dye Touches It

Humidity keeps the scalp in a low-grade damp state, disrupts the skin's natural barrier function, and — as covered in our piece on monsoon hair fall — creates conditions for mild, often unnoticed inflammation. A scalp in this state has a weaker barrier against chemical penetration than a scalp in dry, stable weather.

PPD is one of the most common causes of allergic contact dermatitis in hair dye, and its risk scales with how compromised the scalp barrier already is. Applying it to skin that's already inflamed from weeks of humidity exposure — even inflammation you can't see or feel yet — increases both the likelihood and severity of a reaction.

This is why some people who've coloured their hair without issue for years suddenly react badly during a monsoon-season touch-up. It's rarely the same formula behaving differently. It's the scalp it's being applied to.

Why "Patch Test and Proceed" Isn't Enough in This Season

A patch test measures your reaction to the product on a small, likely less-compromised area — usually behind the ear or on the forearm — not the cumulative state of your actual scalp after weeks of humid-weather buildup. It's still worth doing, but it isn't a full answer during monsoon months specifically.

What This Means If You Colour Regularly

For working professionals who colour every four to six weeks to manage greys, monsoon isn't a season to skip — it's a season to reconsider the formula, not just the timing.

  1. If you're set on PPD dye, extend the gap between your last intense scalp treatment (oiling, exfoliating, active haircare) and your colouring appointment, giving the barrier time to settle.
  2. Watch for early signs — mild tingling or warmth in the first hour — and don't dismiss them as normal processing sensation during this season specifically.
  3. Consider a PPD-free formulation for monsoon touch-ups specifically, even if you use PPD dye the rest of the year. The barrier risk is seasonal; your product choice can be too.

PPD-free doesn't mean color-compromise — modern PPD-free formulations have closed much of the performance gap. What it does mean is one less variable working against an already-stressed scalp during the months it's least equipped to handle it.

Sukham Handmade's PPD-free hair colour was developed for exactly this kind of seasonal reality — full coverage without adding chemical load to a scalp already managing monsoon stress.
