*More hair oil doesn't mean more benefit*
For generations, hair oiling has been part of Indian hair-care routines.
And somewhere along the way, we developed an interesting idea:
If a little oil is good, more oil must be better.
Not really.
Your hair and scalp don't have an unlimited capacity to benefit from oil.
Once your hair and scalp are adequately coated, adding more mostly means you now have a much bigger washing problem.
*So how much hair oil do you actually need?*
There is no single number that works for everyone.
The amount depends on:
• Hair length
• Hair thickness
• Scalp condition
• Hair texture
• Whether you are oiling only the scalp or the lengths too
• How frequently you wash your hair
The goal isn't to make your hair dripping wet with oil.
The goal is to apply enough to lightly cover the scalp and hair where needed.
*Your scalp doesn't need to be swimming in oil*
If you are applying oil to your scalp, use your fingertips and distribute it gently.
You don't need to aggressively massage for twenty minutes.
You don't need to scratch the scalp with your nails.
And you definitely don't need to keep adding oil because the hair still looks dry.
Sometimes what your hair needs is conditioning or a better washing routine, not another cup of oil.
*What happens when you use too much?*
Excess oil can make the hair feel heavy, greasy and difficult to wash.
If you already have an oily scalp, excessive oiling may simply make your scalp feel more uncomfortable.
And if you're using a large amount of oil because you believe it will make your hair grow faster, that's where expectations need to be realistic.
Hair growth is influenced by many factors. Pouring more oil onto your scalp doesn't automatically make hair grow faster.
*Try this instead*
Start with a small amount.
Part your hair into sections.
Apply a little oil to the scalp if scalp oiling suits you, then distribute a small amount through the lengths if they need it.
Massage gently.
Leave it for a period that works with your routine.
Then wash thoroughly.
If your hair still feels greasy after washing, you probably used more than you needed.
*The old-fashioned lesson still works*
Our grandmothers didn't necessarily need half a bottle of oil to care for their hair.
The ritual was often simple:
Oil. Massage. Wash. Repeat when needed.
Good hair care isn't about doing more.
It's about doing what your hair actually needs.
So the next time you reach for the bottle, pause before pouring.
Your hair may not need more oil.
It may simply need the right amount.
Try a smaller amount of hair oil in your next hair-care routine and see how your hair responds.
