Be honest.
You pick up a soap, body butter or hair product. You open it. It smells wonderful. And suddenly, you are interested.
We are wired to respond to smell. Fragrance can make a product feel luxurious, fresh, comforting or nostalgic.
But here is the thing:
A beautiful smell is not proof that a product is a good product.
Fragrance is only one part of the experience.
Why does fragrance influence us so much?
Smell is closely connected with memory and emotion.
The smell of sandalwood may remind you of a temple. Jasmine may remind you of evenings at home. Citrus can feel
fresh and energetic. Lavender can feel calming simply because we associate it with relaxation.
So it makes complete sense that fragrance influences what we buy.
But there is a difference between loving a fragrance and choosing a product for your skin because of that fragrance.
What should you look at instead?
When choosing a skincare or hair-care product, look beyond the fragrance.
Consider:
• What is the product actually meant to do?
• What ingredients does it contain?
• Is it suitable for your skin or hair type?
• Does the brand clearly disclose its ingredients?
• Is the fragrance coming from essential oils, fragrance ingredients or a combination?
• Does your skin tolerate fragranced products well?
A product can smell incredible and still not be suitable for your particular skin.
Likewise, a product with a subtle or earthy smell can be beautifully formulated.
Natural fragrance doesn't automatically mean better
The word natural can sound reassuring, but natural does not automatically mean safer for everyone.
Essential oils are natural aromatic ingredients, but they are still concentrated substances. Some people may be
sensitive to particular essential oils or fragrances.
That is why conscious skincare isn't about blindly choosing everything labelled natural.
It is about knowing what you are putting on your skin.
So, should you avoid fragrance?
Not necessarily.
If your skin tolerates fragrance well and you enjoy beautifully scented products, there is nothing wrong with enjoying the
sensory experience.
The point is simply this:
Don't let fragrance be your only buying criterion.
Look at the formulation. Look at the ingredients. Look at how your skin responds.
And then, if it smells wonderful too, that's a lovely bonus.
The Sukham way
At Sukham Handmade, we believe skincare should be more than something that simply smells good.
The ingredients, formulation and purpose matter.
The fragrance should complement the experience, not distract you from what is actually inside the product.
Because sometimes the most important thing about a skincare product isn't what you smell when you open the package.
It's how thoughtfully the product has been made.
Choose with your eyes. Read with curiosity. And let your nose enjoy the bonus.
Explore the ingredients before you choose your next skincare product.
